چکیده

There is no doubt that the concept of volume holography has led to an incredibly great amount of scientific research and technological applications. One of these applications is the use of volume holograms as optical memories, and in particular, the use of a photosensitive medium like a photopolymeric material to record information in all its volume. In this work we analyze the applicability of Kogelnik’s Coupled Wave theory to the study of volume holograms recorded in photopolymers. Some of the theoretical models in the literature describing the mechanism of hologram formation in photopolymer materials use Kogelnik’s theory to analyze the gratings recorded in photopolymeric materials. If Kogelnik’s theory cannot be applied is necessary to use a more general Coupled Wave theory (CW) or the Rigorous Coupled Wave theory (RCW). The RCW does not incorporate any approximation and thus, since it is rigorous, permits judging the accurateness of the approximations included in Kogelnik’s and CW theories. In this article, a comparison between the predictions of the three theories for phase transmission diffraction gratings is carried out. We have demonstrated the agreement in the prediction of CW and RCW and the validity of Kogelnik’s theory only for gratings with spatial OPEN ACCESS Materials 2012, 5 1374 frequencies higher than 500 lines/mm for the usual values of the refractive index modulations obtained in photopolymers.

Improved maximum uniformity and capacity of multiple holograms recorded in absorbent photopolymers.

In order to use photopolymers in the recording of holographic memories, high physical thickness is required. This generates many problems associated with the attenuation of light in the recording due to Beer's law. One of the more significant disadvantages is the fact that there are differences between the physical thickness of the material and the optical thickness of the holograms recorded. T...

Research on Holographic Sensors and Novel Photopolymers at the Centre for Industrial and Engineering Optics

The recent resurgence of interest in photopolymers for commercial holograms is a strong incentive for development of photopolymers that are as environmentally friendly as possible. Photopolymer materials consist of a light-sensitive film which is exposed during production to form the hologram, thereby offering versatility well beyond that of current security holograms, which are mass produced f...

Diffusion-based model to predict the conservation of gratings recorded in poly(vinyl alcohol)-acrylamide photopolymer.

Photopolymers are interesting materials for use in recording information in holography. We study the holographic behavior and stability of volume holograms recorded in poly(vinyl alcohol)--acrylamide photopolymers with and without a cross linker. Using a first-harmonic diffusion model, we analyze the residual monomer that remains when volume diffraction gratings are recorded in photopolymer mat...

Dimensional changes in slanted diffraction gratings recorded in photopolymers

Photopolymers are appealing materials for many optical applications. For most of them, shrinkage plays an important role in the final properties of the display, especially in holographic data storage applications. In this paper, we demonstrate that to quantify correctly the shrinkage, it is mandatory to measure the angle of propagation for both diffracted orders ± 1, so that an accurate value o...

New recording materials for the holographic industry

This paper describes a new class of recording materials for volume holographic applications suitable to meet commercial manufacturing needs. These next-generation holographic photopolymers have the ability to satisfy the unmet demand for color and depth tuning that is only possible with volume holograms. Unlike earlier holographic photopolymers, these new materials offer the advantages of no ch...
